What is RUAIH certification?
RUAIH stands for Responsible Use of AI in Healthcare. It is a certification programme announced by The Joint Commission on 1 June 2026 — the accreditor most US hospitals already answer to — and it grew out of the guidance The Joint Commission published jointly with the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI) in September 2025.
Three things make it different from the frameworks that came before it.
It carries a surveyor. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework and CHAI’s governance playbooks are references: useful, voluntary, unenforced. A Joint Commission certification is a thing an assessor arrives to verify. The difference between a framework and a certification is the difference between a reading list and an exam.
It certifies the organisation, not the algorithm. RUAIH is not an FDA clearance and does not bless any vendor’s product. It addresses whether your organisation knows what AI it runs, who governs it, how performance is watched, and how people are trained — the operational layer, which is exactly the layer most organisations have not built.
It arrives before its own manual. As of this page’s review date, the standards manual is not public. What exists is the announcement, the 2025 joint guidance, and CHAI’s playbooks — which together describe a consistent shape: inventory, governance body, monitoring against baselines, bias assessment, incident reporting, workforce training. Anything more specific than that is inference, and pages on this site label it as such.
The practical consequence of the unpublished manual is covered in the timeline question — and it is not “wait.” Nor is the programme theoretical any longer: Hackensack Meridian Health earned the first RUAIH certification on 29 July 2026 (HMH announcement, 29 July 2026).

Is RUAIH certification mandatory?
No. As announced, it is a voluntary certification, like other Joint Commission certification programmes. Whether payers, boards or states make it commercially unavoidable is a separate question — and the usual trajectory of voluntary certifications is worth planning around.
Does RUAIH certify AI products or hospitals?
Organisations, not products. RUAIH addresses how a health system governs the AI it uses — inventory, oversight, monitoring, training — rather than approving any particular vendor tool.

No. RUAIH is a certification programme of The Joint Commission. The Healthcare AI Institute is independent and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or certified by The Joint Commission.
